unsubscribe week

I hereby declare this week Unsubscribe Week!

I don't know about you, but I get TONS of email every week from companies, newsletters, websites, etc. Somewhere along the way, I probably signed up for all of it. But now, I seem to be spending an inordinate amount of time deleting unwanted emails. After reading someone else's blog (I'm sorry if it's you, but I can't remember whose blog it was), who was encountering the same problem and decided to just unsubscribe from everything, I decided it seemed like a good idea.

So I've been unsubscribing from things all week, and the ones that I think I might actually want to read, I'm setting up all kinds of filters to get them where they should go instead of always right in my inbox.

Anyway, if you find yourself in the same spot, feel free to declare it Unsubscribe Week with me. :)

weekend o'relaxation

There has been a lot of talk lately about rest. I am not good at resting. I've been going non-stop since August. Working at least 6 days a week at 2 (sometimes 3) different jobs. That leaves little time to do the things that I need to do to make our household run, or things that I want to do to have fun, and no time for relaxing. If I do have free time, there is always something that needs to be done hanging over my head.

Well, this weekend is my first weekend off, and I'm taking full advantage. After work yesterday, I made a quick stop at Redbox to rent a few movies, came home, immediately put on my most comfortable sweatpants and t-shirt, and immediately embarked upon my weekend of rest. I have plenty of football and movies to keep me entertained for longer than I would ever get to rest for.

So that's what I'm doing - sitting on a couch, watching football and movies in my pajamas. And that's where I plan to stay all day today. If I do anything productive, the only requirement is that it can't be something that NEEDS to be done. It can only be something that I WANT to do.

Call me lazy if you want. Maybe I am being lazy, but I think I'm allowed to be lazy for a couple days.... :)

a few more christmas card options

Christmas Cards

So I've never sent out Christmas Cards to a whole bunch of people. I think part of the reason is that I can't find any that I like enough to send out to everyone I know. So, this year, as things are winding down from wedding season and I am slowly regaining my sanity, I decided to add yet one more thing to my plate and try to design my own Christmas cards this year.

I'll add this one caveat: I'm not a graphic designer. I like graphic design. I appreciate good design. I wish I was good at it. I wanted to get a design minor when I was in college. I went so far as to try and meet with the dean and some professors at the design school at State. However, clearly, engineers are not worthy of learning design, and no one would talk to me. So, instead, I dabble. And I'm sure I make plenty of mistakes along the way.

Anyway, with that said, tonight I designed a few Christmas card options. I'm even going to try to write a Christmas letter to go in it. I'm for serious this year.

So, let me know what you think:

I think that Joel might have an objection to this one... but I'm not sure I really care... :)

I won't tell you which is my favorite, I want to wait and see what you have to say... If you have suggestions, let me know - I know there are some graphic designers out there, so I'd love to hear your input...

Ocracoke Island

This past weekend I did a wedding on Ocracoke Island. Let me tell you, that was quite the adventure. Rachel (my second shooter for the weekend and another fabulous MHP photographer) drove in to Raleigh on Thursday night. Friday morning at 9am we began our journey east... East on Hwy 70, through New Bern, and Havelock (which I did not realize was the last bit of civilization in that direction). Just past Havelock, we decided that it was time for lunch. Unfortunately, having passed the last point of civilization, there was literally NOWHERE to stop. We drove and drove and drove, and about 20 miles from the end of the earth (read: ferry terminal) I saw a little country store at the intersection of Hwy 70 and Hwy 12. By this point we also were in pretty desperate need of a bathroom, having not stopped in the last 3.5 hours. I stopped and went in to ask the owner if there was anywhere to get food between there and the ferry. She directed us a little bit out of the way of the ferry to a take out place called White Point Take Out. No bathroom at the store...

So off we went on the way to find this place, praying for good food and a bathroom. It was in a town with literally 50 people. We drove up to White Point Take Out to find a little tiny shack smaller than my living room with 3 ladies inside making food. We also found a sign saying "no checks or credit cards accepted"... hmm, this could be a problem. See, I didn't think about having to stop in a town of 50 people for food, so I had exactly $6 on me. Whoops. But with that $6 I was able to get a shrimp burger which, once I got it, 30 minutes later, was really good. While we waited, a group of locals pulled up for lunch. Apparently you can call ahead - would have been nice to know that... but wait, we had no cell phone coverage, so we couldn't have called anyway. However, as you can imagine, in a shack smaller than my living room, there was no bathroom. So we grabbed our food, ran back to the car, and booked it as fast as we possibly could to the ferry landing. I've never been so happy to be out of the car - and luckily, there was an ATM in the little ferry store, so I could get some cash (which turned out to be much needed later).

The ferry ride was another 2.5 hours, over some pretty rough water, actually. Ocracoke itself is a cute little place. I think the whole village fits within about 2 square miles. The rest of the island is owned by the Park Service, and can't be built on. We found our hotel, the Lightkeeper's Guest House, which was an old home that has been converted into a bed and breakfast. Well, I say bed and breakfast, but really it was just half of that, because there was no breakfast. It was really cute though.

It was a great wedding, even though it poured rain and the reception was outside (under a tent, luckily). The couple was great - they were completely awesome and didn't protest one bit when I told them we were going out in the rain for pictures. I love that.

I didn't sleep well there though, and I was really happy when I got home Sunday, after another 7 hour trip, and got to crawl in my bed that night.

All in all, a good trip. One more weekend long trip coming up... this time to Bald Head Island/Holden Beach for an engagement shoot, another wedding, and celebrating Pam and JD's anniversary. We have a surprise for them - but since JD is one of the few people who reads this, I can't say what it is.... :) (Sorry JD)

the latest...

It has been quite a while since I updated this blog. And there has been quite a lot going on. Since the beginning of September, I've had a wedding every weekend, and the trend continues (with two weekends off) until Thanksgiving. It's been a lot of fun - I've had some incredible couples, and have even more incredible couples coming up in the next couple months.

My sister is in medical school now, and she seems to be loving it! One of my weekends off from weddings, we're heading up to Blacksburg so I can see her get her white coat. I can't believe that she's going to be a doctor - I know that she's going to be incredible at it. I couldn't be more proud - she's worked so hard to get there.

Joel took the LSAT again on Saturday. Now we're playing the waiting game again, and he's filling out applications again. We're getting good at this waiting thing... It's not always pleasant, but I feel like it's become a part of our life that's so normal now that it would be weird to know something for certain.

That's the latest... Stay tuned. More to come, promise.
